KISAWA SANCTUARY

Kisawa Sanctuary redefines luxury hospitality by seamlessly blending cultural celebration with environmental conservation on Benguerra Island, Mozambique. Situated 14 kilometers off the Eastern coast of Africa as part of the Bazaruto Archipelago, this WWF National Marine Park boasts rich and lesser-explored subtropical ecosystems in the Indian Ocean.

Comprising 14 one, two, and three-bedroom bungalows nestled within a 300-hectare expanse of forest, beach, and sand dunes, Kisawa offers unparalleled privacy and appreciation of the natural surroundings. Each bungalow, occupying a one-acre plot, provides 380 square meters of internal space and 560 square meters of external space.

The architecture of Kisawa seamlessly merges tradition with technology, employing innovative use of natural materials. A unique building component utilizes sand and saltwater from Benguerra Island, replacing less sustainable construction practices. This sand-based mortar lends a tactile and natural finish to various elements of the build and serves as the base material for a patented 3D sand-printing technology. Utilized across the sanctuary, these methods are combined with local Mozambican weaving, thatching, carpentry, and textile skills.

Guests can enjoy multiple dining venues, including beach clubs, a lagoon-style swimming pool, Barraca beach bar, library, and lounge at the main terrace. The stand-alone spa offers traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic treatments, featuring architecture inspired by the island’s thatched houses and community buildings.
